MOUNT MANRESA SITE UPDATE:
The Savos officially lost their appeal on the street names. They are now stuck with names that the Borough President gave them: Cupidity Drive, Fourberie Lane and Avidita Place. Cupidity means “an inordinate desire for wealth,” Fourberie means “trickery, deception” and Avidita means “consuming greed.”

Borough President Oddo and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are also pushing the Board of Standards and Appeals to require that the Savos build on City Streets (instead of creating a private development), which would require a lengthy ULURP process, and would reduce the density planned for the site. We continue to watch the site and hope it may one day have a better future, such as a park, or school, or community center.
LAST CALL – Mount Manresa Book– If you haven’t already submitted something for the Mount Manresa book…this is literally the last call. Please please please…tell us in a paragraph or two what Mount Manresa meant to you, before, after or during the fight to save it. Pictures, memories, or how you were inspired. You write it, we will put it in the book. Next Friends of Mount Manresa Meeting is Friday, Sept 8 at 7pm.
REZONING ROSEBANK, CLIFTON and FORT WADSWORTH:
The Committee to Save Mount Manresa and Community Board 1, are pushing for a Rezoning of Clifton, Fort Wadsworth and Rosebank, but we are hitting a roadblock with City Planning, who stated that the community must pay THOUSANDS for an environmental review to move forward. City Planning also disagrees that a rezoning is necessary and seem to be pushing for more density in these areas. We are determined to make this rezoning happen before the character of our community is destroyed by overdevelopment.
LANDMARKING ST. MARY’S CHURCH in ROSEBANK:
Big thanks to our member Phyllis Zito, who has been working hard on the process to get St. Mary’s Landmarked. Our efforts to get St. Mary’s landmark was picked up again by the SI Advance and NY1. St. Mary’s is not only the 2nd oldest church on Staten Island, its a visual landmark for Rosebank, it closed in 2015 and is at risk of being sold to developers, as it is zoned R-4. If you haven’t already, please sign our petition to Landmark St. Mary.
All eyes on Graniteville – New group formed: Conservancy for Wetlands and Forests (CWF)
Graniteville is now on the watch list, as a developer is looking to destroy the wetlands and build a BJs or big box store. Its important save what’s left of our natural resources from overdevelopment. Committee to Save Manresa member Gabriella is working hard to build a bigger coalition of civics, environmental, and community groups to preserve the Graniteville woods and wetlands. Together we can make a big impact!!! Please sign this petition to save the Graniteville Wetlands.
