(Staten Island, N.Y.) — The Committee to “Save Mount Manresa” will hold a rally on Saturday, April 12 at 1pm at the intersection at Richmond Avenue and Platinum Avenue. The rally’s purpose is to bring attention the plans of Savo Brothers to cram 250 townhouses into the pristine 15.4 acres of Mount Manresa property.

The property, trees and structures are currently protected by a Temporary Restraining Order issued by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Peter Moulton on Tuesday, April 7. On Monday April 14, at 3pm the court will hear arguments to preserve the site and that the city Department of Buildings permits for the site require environmental review.

The Committee has chosen the new location miles away from Mount Manresa due to the fact that it was a high traffic area.

“A development the size of what is being proposed by the Savo Brothers would be incredibly taxing on a community, with very unbalanced zoning. This community can’t handle this type of overdevelopment.” says Committee President Jack Bolembach.

“This was the same area that Mayor Bloomberg toured when the Growth Management Task force was created in 2003. The same issues, of school overcrowding, traffic, impact on the sewer systems, fire department, hospitals, and wildlife still remain, and are even more relevant with the expansion of the Staten Island Expressway. Mount Manresa was overlooked in rezoning and hillside preservation. It must be considered now.”

“The unique rare historical, geological and natural features of Mount Manresa make it imperative that it be protect for current and future generations. ”

Borough President, James Oddo stated that he finds the Savo’s plan to build 250 townhouses in this area “unacceptable.” However to date, the future of this property is still at risk.

The Committee is calling for all of Staten Island’s help to protect Mount Manresa from being destroyed by bulldozers by writing to Mayor de Blasio at City Hall, NY,NY 10007 in an effort to get the Mayor come and see Mount Manresa for himself.

“Once it is gone, it will be gone forever.” says Bolembach
