Committee to Save Mount Manresa Car Rally – May 30th to demand Immediate Zoning Changes.
On Saturday May 30 at 11am The Committee to Save Mount Manresa will lead a car rally through the streets of Rosebank, Fort Wadsworth, Clifton and Shore Acres in Staten Island, NY.
The rally will begin at Von Breisen Park. A caravan of cars will follow a route through affected communities. The goal is to bring awareness of the existing zoning and show the impact of future overdevelopment will have in causing the deterioration of the quality of life of current residents.
“City Planning has failed to zone these areas properly, and at this point refused to acknowledge that the current zoning only benefits the builders, and non-action will adversely impact our residents, and our quality of life. We will continue to fight to make sure that these issues are addressed.” says Committee President, Jack Bolembach
“If we don’t fix the zoning now, older homes on large lots will be replaced by dozens of ugly townhouses. Any open green space will be destroyed and tall buildings will be built destroying the current character of the neighborhoods.” says Bolembach.
“Our infrastructure will be overwhelmed by massive overdevelopment and we’ll be forced to live with the consequences of crime, pollution, dirty streets, flooding sewers and incredible traffic.”
“This car rally will show the impact of a fraction of the cars that will flood this neighborhood if development is allowed to occur with the current zoning in place. We need to wake up the neighborhood and get the residents out of their homes. We need everyone involved in this fight. “says Committee Secretary, Barbara Sanchez.
The Committee has joined forces with the parents of PS13, who are also holding an event at the same time at the school, to increase community response to the need for a K-8 and the lack of school seats for the existing population.
“The issues of school seats and zoning are related. The ability for new homes to be built should be directly tied to the having the school seats to accommodate new families. Legislation exists on the South Shore to prevent these problems, but on the North Shore, we are defenseless, and the builders have the upper hand.” said Sanchez.
The Community Board 1 Land Use Committee is expected to discuss the zoning of Fort Wadsworth, Rosebank, Clifton and Shore Acres at the next Land Use Meeting on June 1, at 7:30 at the Board Office at 1 Edgewater Plaza.
